When Shari McCright, a retired Lincoln Public Schools teacher, joined Lincoln Literacy as a tutor in 2019, she brought with her 33 years of teaching experience and a passion for her community. She also brought a love for cooking.
A self-described “foodie” who especially enjoys international cuisine, Shari contributed her recipe for Mulligatawny Soup to our digital cookbook.
The soup, she explains, is a perfect metaphor for her work.
“This soup is a melting pot of flavors, spices, and textures from many parts of the world, including India and Great Britain,” Shari says. “The diverse ingredients blend to create a dish that is warm, satisfying, and delicious.”
This is exactly what she sees in her classroom every day.
Today, Shari coordinates the “School Jobs” program at Lincoln Literacy. This class is designed for our new American learners who have a goal of working in a school. As Shari notes, many of them were professional teachers in their home countries.
“My class is a melting pot of cultures, ideas, and experiences,” she says. “My students from all over the world share their talents and knowledge with one another.”
Just like the ingredients in her soup, her students’ diverse backgrounds blend to create “something wonderful.” They learn about the US school system, p ractice for interviews, and support one another on their new career paths.
When you try Shari’s Mulligatawny Soup recipe from our Anchovy cookbook, you’re not just making a delicious meal. You’re supporting the program that helps talented individuals share their gifts with the Lincoln community and find meaningful jobs with partners like Lincoln Public Schools.
