Immigration in Nebraska is a matter of survival for many businesses. With a 2.5% unemployment rate in Lincoln, our partners, like Kawasaki Motors Manufacturing Corp, USA and TMCO, Inc., are short on workers.
According to the CEO of Kawasaki Lincoln, Mike Boyle, a third of Kawasaki’s factory employees are immigrants. Boyle said, “If we did not have that labor, we’d either have to cancel work, turn away orders, or make our products somewhere else in a different country.”
More than a third of TMCO, Inc. employees are immigrants or refugees, as well. The hope for many local businesses in Nebraska is that the legal immigration system allows for people to arrive and work to fill open, in-demand positions in our community. Lincoln Literacy works with both companies to teach English on-site to improve their workplace skills and technical vocabulary.
