About Us
The mission of the Lincoln Literacy Council, which was adopted by the Board of Directors in August 2007, is to assist people of all cultures and strengthen our community by teaching English language and literacy skills.
Lincoln Literacy Council (LLC) was formed in 1972 for the purpose of combating adult illiteracy in Lincoln, Nebraska. Since then it has also become the area's premiere charitable provider of instruction to English language learners.
As a private, nonprofit, tax-exempt organization, LLC is proud to be affiliated with ProLiteracy Worldwide and ProLiteracy America. It is an official United Way agency.
Our offices are at 745 South 9th Street, Lincoln, NE 68508, but we offer classes and individual tutoring all over the city through our many partnerships with community agencies, organizations, and businesses. Since 1999, LLC has tripled the number of clients served annually and expanded the number of paid staff. In 2006 LLC provided services to 798 unduplicated clients. Approximately 90 percent of LLC?s clients are low-to-moderate income persons (as determined by federal poverty guidelines). More than 90 percent are English language learners, who come from more than 60 countries. LLC has secured and managed charitable, corporate, and government funding awards and received consistent private donor support to sustain its services.
LLC is governed by an all-volunteer board of directors. It has a staff of twelve mostly part-time employees, and a corps of more than 250 active volunteer tutors.
